HARARE, Zimbabwe - Zimbabwe's Catholic Justice and Peace Commission is protesting political violence and urging the United Nations and African Union to supervise a planned presidential runoff.
In a statement to coincide with church services yesterday, the Roman Catholic human rights body said the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission can not be trusted as a "neutral and nonpartisan electoral umpire" after its five-week delay in announcing final results of the March 29th national election amid witness reports of politically motivated murder, abduction and torture.
The Catholic commission says it has compiled credible witness reports of systematic violence against civilians suspected of voting against President Robert Mugabe.
