Ministry Leader: Hunger Crisis is a Religious Issue

WASHINGTON - The Lutheran pastor who heads the Bread for the World ministry says rapidly rising food prices have pushed another 100 million of the world's poorest people into hunger.
The Reverend David Beckman told Religion and Ethics Newsweekly that a number of factors are involved, including increased demand in developing nations and rising oil prices. But he said the diversion of much of the U.S. corn crop into fuel instead of food is part of the problem and should be reconsidered.
Beckman said more food aid and agricultural assistance are also needed.
Beckman said, "I think this hunger crisis really is a religious issue, because if we know anything about God we know that God listens to the prayers of hungry mothers who can't feed their kids."
