CBNNews.com - TEL AVIV, Israel - Just in time to celebrate the nation's 60th anniversary, 400 olim chadashim arrived in Israel Monday.
The new arrivals were the focus of "Aliyah Day," sponsored by the Jewish Agency and the Israeli Absorption Ministry.
Jews immigrating to Israel under the Law of Return are "making
aliyah," literally ascending, or immigrating to Israel.
"This is a day of celebration for Israel," Jewish Agency Chairman Ze'ev Bielski said. "It is due to the new olim that Israel has reached the day in which it celebrates it 60th anniversary," he said.
Israeli Absorption Minister Yaacov Edery and Sephardic Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar were on hand at Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion International Airport to welcome the new arrivals, hailing from the US, Australia, Russia, France, and Honduras.
Some 3,050,000 Jews from 90 countries have immigrated to the Jewish homeland since the founding of the modern State of Israel on May 14, 1948.
