Manifesto Called an Effort to Reclaim the Word "Evangelical"

WASHINGTON - The organizer of today's release of "An Evangelical Manifesto" says it's partially an effort to reclaim the meaning of the word.
Larry Ross notes that "evangel" means "good news: the good news of the Gospel."
He says drafters of the manifesto are concerned that "evangelical" has taken on political connotations that have confused believers and obscured the word's true character and meaning.
Leading evangelicals who haven't signed the document are anxious to defend what they view as a Christian mandate to impact politics, especially when moral issues are involved.
