Evangelicals Call for Respectful Political Engagement

WASHINGTON - Fuller Theological Seminary president Richard Mouw says evangelical Christians have a history of either giving up on the culture or trying to take it over.
Mouw and other authors of "An Evangelical Manifesto" are calling instead for Christian political engagement that respects people of all faiths.
At a Washington news conference, evangelical author Os Guinness said, "We are not theocrats -- we are in favor of a civil public square" -- one which recognizes the rights of all.
The manifesto urges evangelicals to look beyond what it calls "single-issue politics, such as abortion and marriage," and focus more on issues like racism, corruption and poverty.
The authors add that evangelicals should identify with Jesus Christ more than any political party.
