CAPITOL HILL - Senator Joseph Lieberman says Israel's rebirth in 1948 was a landmark for the Jewish people, whose history began 4,000 years ago with God's promise to make Abraham a great nation.

Lieberman marked modern Israel's 60th birthday Thursday with a speech on the Senate floor.

He recalled that Jerusalem was the site of the Biblical Jewish Temples -- the second one destroyed by Rome one generation after Jesus of Nazareth "taught and healed the Jews."

During almost 1,900 years of exile, Lieberman said Jews and many Christians prayed for Israel's restoration, and the United States was the first nation to recognize it in 1948.

Lieberman, who's Jewish, is a Connecticut Independent who caucuses with the Democratic majority.
