Nat'l. Fraud Unit Confiscates Documents

CBNNews.com - JERUSALEM, Israel - As police continue their investigation of bribery allegations against Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, two National Fraud Unit detectives, armed with a search warrant, arrived at City Hall Monday afternoon to examine documentation from Olmert's tenure as Jerusalem mayor from 1993-2003.
"The search is linked to the time that Olmert worked in the municipality and to suspicions of receiving the funds," Israel Police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld told the press.
Five months ago, police searched documents at the Jerusalem offices of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor relevant to another investigation against Olmert.
Earlier Monday, Cmdr. (ret.) Yaakov Borovsky, former chief investigator at the State Comptroller's Office, said the latest criminal investigation against Olmert is far more serious than receiving money illegally.
Borovsky, who pointed out that money Olmert received from American philanthropist Morris Talansky from 2003 to 2005 had nothing to do with funding campaigns, believes the latest investigation will result in an indictment.
Meanwhile, National Fraud Unit detectives interrogated Talansky Monday afternoon on suspicions of raising funds that were illegally transferred to Olmert.
Police also questioned Sheldon Adelson and Daniel Abrams, two billionaire American Jewish businessmen who may have been involved in various business deals with Talansky that benefitted Olmert.
Police may delay Talansky's rescheduled Wednesday departure from Israel again. Talansky said he wants to return to the States as soon as possible as his wife is seriously ill.
