Abbas Will Fight for 'Right of Return'

CBNNews.com - RAMALLAH, West Bank - Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas vowed to fight for the return of Palestinian "refugees" to Israel.
"Israel has failed to wipe out the memory of the Nakba [the "Catastrophe", the Arab perception of Israel's statehood] from the minds of successive Palestinian generations," Abbas said.
"They [Israeli Jews] thought perhaps the elderly would forget. But today we see that neither the elderly nor the young have forgotten," the PA president said.
"Everyone remembers the
Nakba," Abbas said.
On Thursday, PA officials also organized a Nakba event in Lebanon calling for Palestinians and their friends there to form a human chain along the northern border.
In PA-controlled cities in Judea and Samaria (the West Bank), work and traffic will stop at midday Thursday, while in the Gaza Strip, schools and universities are closed for the day.
Palestinians plan to release 22,000 black balloons in areas under PA control, representing Arab mourning over the creation of the State of Israel and their protest over the visit of US President George W. Bush for Israel's 60th anniversary.
While past Israeli governments have made the so-called right of return of Palestinians living in surrounding Arab countries a non-starter, the Olmert government has brought the concept to the negotiating table, making it a "core issue," along with Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.
Flooding Israel with millions of Arabs would, in essence, bring an end to the Jewish state, which is the core of the concept.
