CBNNews.com - JERUSALEM, Israel - A senior Israeli Defense official told foreign journalists Wednesday that accepting Egypt's draft cease-fire "would be a victory for Hamas."
"A cease-fire, which is the easy way out, will ensure us of several months of quiet but will also entrench the Hamas state in Gaza, which will become more and more dependent on the Iranians," he said.
According to the official, Israeli measures, including limiting supplies into the Gaza Strip and the IDF's counter-terror operations there has diminished the popularity of the ruling Hamas party.
"Hamas is coming to the cease-fire on its knees as a result of our pressures," he said.
But he also said it's likely the terror group will retain its upper hand in the area.
"Unless someone intervenes forcefully, Hamas will continue to run Gaza," he said.
According to the official, Gaza-based Palestinians move freely across the porous border with Egypt, irrespective of the status of the Rafah crossing.
Many of them are being trained in Iran and others are responsible for weapons smuggling from Egypt into Gaza.
"The Egyptians, to put in mildly, are not successfully preventing the supply and rearming of Hamas," the defense official said.
