Bush: Faith-Based Initiatives Will Go on After He Leaves Office

The Associated Press

WHITE HOUSE - President Bush says he's confident that the faith-based initiative he launched almost 8 years ago will survive his presidency.

The president told a conference of more than 1,000 government and private social service providers that the initiative has become a grassroots movement that's "bigger than politics or any political party."

He noted that 35 states, the majority of them with Democratic governors, have established their own faith-based offices and programs.

In supporting the social work of religious charities, Bush said, "Government should never fund the teaching of faith, but it should support the good works of the faithful."

He predicted that faith-based initiatives will continue "long after" he leaves the White House.
