CBNNews.com - JERUSALEM, Israel - United Nations Resolution 1701, which accompanied the UN-brokered cease-fire that ended the Second Lebanon War in the summer of 2006, "has completely failed," Israeli defense officials said Tuesday night.
"Syria is rearming Hezbollah at a rapid pace, and this is proof that [UN Resolution 1701] has completely failed," one official said.
On Wednesday, the National Security Cabinet convened to discuss across-the-board noncompliance of the resolution, evidenced in part by the group's re-supplied missile cache exceeding pre-war numbers times three.
Though Syrian President Bashar Assad talks about peace in the region, Syria has played a key role in rearming the terror group.
Cabinet ministers will also be briefed on the numbers and location of Hezbollah troops deployed in southern Lebanon. A report in the Kuwaiti press last week said Hezbollah is stationing anti-aircraft missiles on strategic mountaintops.
Meanwhile, Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni accompanied visiting Italian FM Franco Frattini on a helicopter trip along the northern border Tuesday.
Israel Defense Forces Brigadier General Amir Eshel, who heads the IDF's Planning Branch, briefed Frattini on Israel's position vis-à-vis a heavily armed terror group at its northern border.
