Ex-Bosnian Leader Faces Genocide Charges

CBNNews.com - After more than a decade on the run, ex-Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic will face charges of genocide and other atrocities against Muslims and Croats in his country, a Serbian prosecutor said Tuesday.
The 63-year-old was arrested Monday night in a Belgrade suburb, officials said at the news conference Tuesday. Karadzic's lawyer said he will appeal the order that would send him to the U.N. tribunal in The Hague, Netherlands.
Karadzic topped the U.N. tribunal's most-wanted list for more than a decade for masterminding the deadly siege of Sarajevo and the 1995 massacre of up to 8,000 Muslims in the Bosnian enclave of Srebrenica.
Concealing his true identity, Karadzic moved freely in a new part of Belgrade and practiced alternative medicine at a private clinic, Serbian government official Rasim Ljajic said.
Until recently, Karadzic's whereabouts were unknown. Serbian security services found the virtually unrecognizable Karadzic while searching for another top war crimes suspect, Ljajic said.
"His false identity was very convincing," Serbian war crimes prosecutor Vladimir Vukcevic said. "Even his landlords were unaware of his identity."
Karadzic is being charged with genocide, extermination, murder, deportation, inhumane acts, and other crimes committed against Bosnian Muslim, Bosnian Croat and other non-Serb civilians in Bosnia during the 1992-1995 war.
