Will Palin Hurt Obama with Faith Voters?
September 1, 2008
Here’s an important question: how much will the Sarah Palin pick hurt the Obama campaign when it comes to reaching out to Evangelicals? The Obama campaign was going after faith voters, especially young Evangelicals. But along comes Sarah Palin, a relatively young, female, Christian politician.
A source close to the Obama campaign tells me the following:
"Obama is a person of deep faith - so is Biden and Palin. Obama was never going to receive the votes from evangelicals for whom abortion is the only issue. But for moderate evangelicals - those who also care about poverty, climate change, health care, war and peace - the Obama / Biden ticket is still hugely compelling. And these voters will certainly be concerned about voting for a ticket where the Vice Presidential candidate was the mayor of a town of less than 9,000 people only two years ago, and would suddenly be just a heartbeat away from the presidency. In sum, this was a desperate choice for the McCain campaign, a hail mary pass that doesn't change Obama's equation much at all."
