RNC Opens with Appeals to Gustav Aid

CBNNews.com - The Republican National Convention began with appeals to give to the Red Cross, Monday, having also made significant changes to the party's schedule in light of Hurricane Gustav.
The convention's opening session was abbreviated as Hurricane Gustav hit the Gulf Coast.

President Bush skipped his planned speech to go to disaster and relief centers, while Sen. John McCain helped pack supplies in Waterville, Ohio, to be sent to the Gulf.
Both men's wives sparked cheers when they appeared before the delegates Monday afternoon, as they urged contributions to help storm victims.
"All their eyes are on the Gulf Coast and everyone is thinking about that," first lady Laura Bush said. Mrs. Bush had also been scheduled to speak Monday night.
"I know they're disappointed they're not going to get to have the program tonight, but everyone understands it, everyone is thinking about everybody all across the Gulf Coast," she told "The Early Show" on CBS.
Republican National Committee Chairman Robert "Mike" Duncan said that by law, the convention had to be called to order on Monday.
A quorum of at least half plus one of the 2,400 delegates was needed to conduct business such as securing a report of the Credentials Committee, adopting the convention's rules, electing the convention's officer and adopting the party's platform.
A quorum is also needed to formally nominate both McCain and running mate Sarah Palin, although they would not have to be onsite to accept their nominations.
