GOP: Move Embassy to Jerusalem

CBNNews.com - St. Paul, Minn. - The Republican Party platform adopted at this week's national convention calls for the United States to move its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. The document also reaffirms the U.S. commitment to Israel's security and calls for a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians, with the proviso that Palestinians "support leaders who reject terror, embrace the institutions and ethos of democracy, and respect the rule of law."
The U.S. Congress passed a law in 1995 mandating that the American embassy move from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. But under State Department pressure, Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, who both promised to move the embassy, blocked the move for more than a decade by enacting a clause in the legislation that allows the executive branch to cite national security concerns.
The 2008 Republican platform states, "We support Jerusalem as the undivided capital of Israel and moving the American embassy to that undivided capital of Israel."
Presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain says he supports moving the embassy.
