McCain: The senator supports a mix of free market and government incentives to foster renewable energy and increase America's energy independence. McCain supports offshore drilling, and generally supports further oil exploration. However, he has opposed drilling in Arctic National Wildlife Reserve.
He does not support subsidizing every alternative fuel option, and would not impose taxes that would restrict innovation.
He says he would work to reduce carbon emissions by 60 percent below the levels in 1990. McCain would impose stiffer fines for automakers who skirt existing fuel-efficiency standards. He says he would call for incentives to increase the use of domestic and foreign ethanol.
McCain has also proposed encouraging efforts in engineering by rewarding innovation that benefits Americans.
Quote: "I will turn all the apparatus of government in the direction of energy independence for our country -- authorizing new production, building nuclear plants, perfecting clean coal, improving our electricity grid, and supporting all the new technologies that one day will put the age of fossil fuels behind us."
Obama: Obama advocates a windfall profits tax on oil companies and says he would give every working family a $1,000 energy rebate to come those profits. He would require 10 percent of U.S. energy to come from renewable sources, like wind, solar power, and geothermal power, by the end of his first term.
He would also create a Global Energy Forum and work with the United Nations on climate change. He has called for more restrictions on carbon in fuels and tougher auto fuel efficiency standards
Obama has shifted positions on offshore drilling recently. He was against lifting federal restrictions on offshore drilling, but this summer supported a bipartisan effort to expand it.
The senator says he would pump $150 billion over 10 years into clean energy sources, and would require that 25 percent of electricity be derived from clean energy sources by 2025. He has also said he would provide a $7,000 tax credit to consumers to buy fuel-efficient cars.
Quote: "But while Big Oil is making record profits, you are paying record prices at the pump and our economy is leaving working people behind."
