Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement

October 8, 2008

At 4:40 p.m. local time in Jerusalem on October 8th, the city and in fact the entire nation of Israel will basically shut down.

Public transportation will stop. By law, there'll be no television or radio broadcasts.

The airports will be shut down and businesses close.

The reason is that Israel -- and Jews worldwide -- will be observing the holiest day of the Jewish year - Yom Kippur - the Day of Atonement.

Recently, we interviewed Joe Shulam, founder of Netivyah Ministries in Jerusalem, about Yom Kippur and the other feasts of the Lord celebrated at this time of year, which include Rosh Hashanah, the Feast of Trumpets, and Succot, the Feast of Tabernacles.

Shulam recounted a fascinating story about the Day of Atonement when the nation of Israel celebrated it 2,000 years ago.

I think you'll find it intriguing in light of the fact that believers in Jesus celebrate Him as the Lamb of God, our Atonement.
