Ministry officials say the gift will be used to help bring first-time literacy to more than 200 million people by the year 2025 by hastening Scripture translation. The multi-million dollar donation will go toward the ministry's Last Languages Campaign, a push to translate the Bible for remaining one-third of language groups worldwide that need one.

"Literacy is key to helping people work their way out of poverty and resist oppression by others," the anonymous donor said. "Children who first learn to read in their own language are more likely to become literate and to stay in school than those who first learn in a different language."

Community Development Starts With Bible Translation

Wycliffe ministry officials argue that critical community development - literacy, the establishment of water purification systems, AIDS education, human rights, and community empowerment - often starts with Bible translation.

Using cutting-edge translation techniques, the Last Languages Campaign will accelerate the pace of language development and Bible translation for the world's remaining language groups from 125 years to 17 years.

Last year, Marshall Carter, the deputy chairman of the New York Stock Exchangem donated his personal jet to Wycliffe Last Languages partner JAARS.

While The Associate Press described the gift as "a non-traditional investment," Carter told the news service his aircraft is now on "its most important mission ever."

Wycliffe Bible Translators consists of dozens of organizations with more than 7,000 people working to make the Bible accessible to all people of the world in a language most meaningful to them. They are headquartered in Orlando, Fla.

Facts About Bible Translation:
