A Deadly Game of Chess
December 22, 2006
History tells us that often two powerful countries that have a beef with each other will use a weaker neighboring country that’s already mired in conflict to duke it out. For example, and the Hezbollah have used for many years as a staging area for aggression against and have fought several conflicts in ’s fertile fields.
Think of it this way, some conflicts are like a deadly game of chess. The recent fighting in has set up the playing board. The soldiers have been put in place. The Ethiopians, backed by the UN and the , are moving the chess pieces of the Somali government. The Eritreans –and to some degree al-Qaeda-are moving the soldiers of the Islamists. Now the opening moves in this “game of strategy” have been taken. What are the leader’s next movements and who will “win” is going to take a while to play out.
The heartbreatking part of this scenario is that there are very real, innocent civilians trapped between the two armies who are already getting caught in the crossfire.
Here’s more on the plight of the innocent.
