Look Out, Kenya! Jihadists Coming Your Way…
January 3, 2007
Let’s take a look at a map…
The Islamists can’t escape in to their sworn enemy’s country of Ethiopia or they would be killed immediately. The Islamists can’t go north because Somali government troops have control of that area. That leaves only Kenya or the ocean as a means of escape from the aggressive Somali government troops and U.S.-backed Ethiopian army.
SCENARIO #1: ESCAPE TO KENYA
Unfortunately, the porous border between Somalia and Kenya is becoming a pipeline for the Islamists. Even though the Kenyan government has “closed” the border at the request of the Somali government, it is so large an area that it can never be fully secured. To their credit, the Kenyans are doing the best they can, but it’s a tough job. They are moving some of their troops to the border to hopefully plug the holes the Islamists can get through.
Recent reports say some Islamists are hiding in the midst of Somali refugees in camps located in Kenya. A few have been found, but there are many who are still lurking about. I bet you anything though the refugees can identify who’s a local and who’s a foreign fighter.
If they make it all the way to Nairobi, the Islamists might have a chance to blend in. There’s a growing Muslim population in Kenya and they may find sympathetic allies there.
SCENARIO #2: ESCAPE TO THE OCEAN
U.S. warships are patrolling off the Somali coast to stop Islamist leaders and foreign militia from escaping. I put in a call to some military contacts in Bahrain and they say the forces America has in the area are there doing regularly scheduled maritime security operations. The ships are there to take care of any suspicious activity…kind of like a policeman walking his beat up and down Main Street.
Now, don’t forget, somehow thousands of foreign fighters were able to slip by and land in Somalia a few months ago. Hopefully the joint forces can catch them on their way out.
SOLUTIONS:
Kenya could potentially find itself with a few hundred radical Islamists with a lot of time on their hands hanging out with in its borders. And analysts say the country could certainly see a rise in acts of terrorism. In my estimation, Kenya’s only hope is to secure the borders…I mean REALLY LOCK DOWN THE BORDERS! Get in UN peacekeepers. Hem in the Islamists. Do whatever you can to keep them out of the country. I know all of this is much easier said than done, but it seems like the only real option open to them right now.
The Islamist leaders are vowing to “rise from the ashes” and fight an insurgency war in Somalia. They probably just need a little time to regroup…take a break…or maybe, if we’re all lucky, go home.
A caring friend will be there to pray with you in your time of need.
