Al-Qaeda in Somalia No Surprise

January 5, 2007

The latest call for jihad from Al-Zawahiri should come as no big surprise. Osama bin Laden himself has been calling for holy war in Somalia for quite some time. And why all the sudden gasps from analysts that NOW Al-Qaeda tactics will be imported in to the country?

Al-Qaeda is already there and their guerrilla techniques have already been successfully implemented by the Islamists. In fact, they used at least two roadside bombs and carried out a suicide bombing in November, weeks before the latest conflict heated up.

Here's an excerpt from a story dated November 20, 2006:

"The Islamic courts are importing tactics from both al-Qaeda and Hezbollah, and bring them to bear against the Transitional Federal Government and Ethiopian forces in Somalia. Over the summer, the Islamic Court used suicide bombers for the first time in Baidoa. The roadside bombs used in the weekend ambush were tested and perfected by al-Qaeda and Hezbollah in Chechnya, Afghanistan, Iraq and Lebanon."

Al-Qaeda is there. Now what is the world going to do about it? How will the Somali government handle the threat of an insurgency war?
