Getting Your Heart's Desire

CBN.com – Gerald Burress is a hard-working husband and father, and he feels like he’s living out the American dream with his wife Sabrina...

He says, “We pray together. Just to have two healthy kids, I’m pretty much set. That brings me joy to see them happy.”

But for years one piece of the puzzle has eluded them. They wanted to buy a home of their own.

Gerald says, “The challenge was actually room.”

Their daughter, Kayla, didn’t want to invite any friends over to their small apartment.

Sabrina recalls, “She would say, ‘No, I share a room with Kyle. I don’t want people to come here.’

“It used to break my heart when we would drive down the street, and [my son] would always say, ‘Mom, more than anything, I just want a backyard.’”

But the dream of buying a house in Los Angeles was totally out of their reach.

“The homes in this area are expensive and for years we didn’t qualify for the asking price,” Sabrina says.

But one day when Sabrina and the kids were watching one of their favorite programs, they heard Gordon Robertson teach on reciprocity.

Gordon said, “When you take that principle first, ‘I’m going to give from my first fruits,’ then you’ll see God come back with His promise.”

“In December, it was the last Friday of the kids’ Christmas vacation,” Sabrina says. “We had literally just got done watching The 700 Club. I looked at them. I already knew what they were going to say. And I said, ‘What do you guys want more than anything?’ And they said, ‘Mom, we want a home.’”

And on that day, Sabrina wrote a check to CBN.

“I said, ‘You know what? Let’s plant our seed.’ We got on our knees at that very couch, the three of us. We prayed, and we had some errands to run. We went to the post office first. We mailed the seed. On the way back home we see this house. The kids were so excited. ‘Is that our prayer being answered?’ Inside as a mom, you go, ‘Please God, don’t disappoint the kids.’”

For the first time ever, Gerald and Sabrina qualified for a home mortgage.

Gerald says, “When you are praying for something, how faithful He is that it may not be presented at our time or when we think we need it. But when it does come about, it’s just awesome. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect.”

Within months, they moved into the home of their dreams -- the house that Sabrina and the children saw on their way back from the post office.

“We have wonderful neighbors. The schools have excellent APL scores. God has really blessed us exceedingly and abundantly,” Sabrina says.

Gerald says he loves watching his children playing outside.

“I get joy when they’re playing in the backyard and laughing and giggling. Just having a good time. It’s awesome.”

Sabrina says, “When I see them here, I’m very thankful that they now have their own rooms. But I am thankful as a mom that I know now what it is to pray and to believe God for something.”
