MARYINKA, Ukraine — While North Korea and Syria receive much attention from the Trump administration, the people of eastern Ukraine continue to suffer from their battle with Russian separatists.

Fighting raged this past winter in the Donetsk region causing much hardship and suffering for the people there.

CBN Humanitarian and Disaster Relief partnered with others in the war zone to bring much-needed help to the besieged town of Maryinka.

Four years have now passed since eastern Ukraine was declared a war zone. Residents of front-line villages and cities are still in a state of hopeless despair and many of them are on the edge of survival having no heat, electricity, food, and other essentials.

People in Maryinka were left without heat after constant shelling damaged the central gas pipeline.

“I live alone. It's quite hard to live alone - there is no gas, they supply water occasionally and sometimes it’s so bad that you just can’t drink it,” explained town resident Nadezhda Tkalich.

Since the start of the war, CBN's Ukrainian staff has regularly provided medical and food assistance to people in the conflict zone.  We’ve helped to resettle refugees, restore destroyed houses, and provide small stoves to unheated homes.

The head of the Roman Catholic Church recognized the depth and scope of CBN’S activity here. Together, we funded the project, "Pope for Ukraine."

In partnership, we purchased and installed wood burning stoves. CBN also helped provide wood and fuel to keep people stocked up for the winter season.

Galina Kucher helped organize the outreach effort. She is the manager of an organization called, helpua.org.

One man who received a heater was told that more help would be coming.

"The boiler is just the beginning of the blessings that we bring to people's houses," Kucher explained. "Because tomorrow firewood will arrive here."

The man was thrilled.

"Wow!" he responded. "Thank you!"

Kucher replied, "Tomorrow, friend, they will deliver firewood!"

Tears formed in the man's eyes as he explained, "I’ve already dissembled (the wood from) my fence because we have nothing to heat with.”

Kucher told CBN News, “We have already installed 300 boilers for heating in Maryinka thanks to the Pope’s initiative. Soon the town of Maryinka will receive 25 trucks...huge trucks, loaded with peat bricks coming from the Rivne region. Peat bricks are good fuel for people to heat their houses.”

Nadehzda Tkalich wiped tears from her eyes as she expresses overwhelming gratitude.

"They’ve brought this boiler to me, thank God. They are going to install everything at their own expense.

I think that little by little life will be re-built, I hope," she said.

Then, the Tkalich made one request.

"Please pray for us all, people here--I am 69 years old--we are so tired, I want peace so I can lay down, lay down my legs, my head to sleep in silence and peace.”

CBN in partnership with others is easing the suffering of the people of eastern Ukraine, bringing them heat and hope.

And reminding them that they are not forgotten.
