New Swing State Poll Shows Presidential Race Tightening

The 2016 presidential race will be a tight one if the findings of a swing poll are any indication.

The Quinnnipiac University Poll shows the race narrowing between presidential contenders Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump in four key swing states.

Trump is leading in Iowa and Georgia and has narrowed the gap with Clinton in Virginia and Colorado.

SWING POLL AT A GLANCE:

  • Colorado:  Clinton 44 - Trump 42, Johnson 10
  • Georgia:  Trump 47 - Clinton 40, Johnson 9
  • Iowa:  Trump 44 - Clinton 37, Johnson 10
  • Virginia: Clinton 45 - Trump 39, Johnson 8

The Virginia numbers show Trump gaining ground since August where Clinton was ahead of him with 45 to 34 percent.

Trump tightened the race in Colorado as well. Clinton lead 41 to 33 percent there last month.

"When Quinnipiac University polled last in those states on Aug. 17, Secretary Hillary Clinton was riding the post-convention wave that gave her double-digit leads in many polls," Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the poll, said. "Now the race has tightened considerably nationally and that new reality is reflected by these numbers that show the two candidates much closer."

Quinnipiac pollsters surveyed respondents by phone Sept. 13-21.  In Colorado they queried 644 likely voters with a margin of error of +/-3.9 percent.

In Georgia, 638 likely voters were polled with a margin of error of +/-3.9 percent.

In Iowa, 612 likely voters responded with a margin of error of +/-4 percent.

In Virginia, pollsters queried 659 likely voters with a margin of error of +/- 3.8 percent.
