Vice President Joe Biden is criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for leading Israel in the "wrong direction."

Speaking at J Street's annual dinner gala in Washington Monday evening, the vice president accused the Israeli leader of jeopardizing peace efforts in the Middle East.

"I firmly believe that the actions that Israel's government has taken over the past several years — the steady and systematic expansion of settlements, the legalization of outposts, land seizures — they're moving us and more importantly they're moving Israel in the wrong direction," Biden told participants, JTA reports.

According to Biden, if Israel does not change course it will cease to exist as a Jewish state.

"The present course Israel's on is not one that's likely to secure its existence as a Jewish, democratic state — and we have to make sure that happens," he said.

Both Biden and Secretary of State John Kerry praised J Street for its support of the Obama administration in the nuclear deal with Iran and said they will continue to push for a two-state solution in the administration's remaining nine months.
