JERUSALEM, Israel – Israeli pilots targeted the terror infrastructure in the Gaza Strip overnight Wednesday in response to a recent barrage of rocket and mortar shell fire on IDF troops searching for openings to attack tunnels along the security fence.

Over the past two days, Hamas has carried out successive mortar attacks against IDF forces working to uncover the tunnels.

"Our efforts to locate and destroy the Hamas terror tunnel network are our main priority due to the serious threat to the lives and wellbeing of Israeli civilians," IDF spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner said in a statement.

Their efforts paid off with the discovery of another tunnel adjacent to the security fence in the southern Gaza Strip.

Since Operation Protective Edge, the IDF has developed new technology to locate the tunnels built by Hamas to infiltrate Israel and execute terror attacks against residents of southern communities.

"We stay committed to safeguarding the people of southern Israel while Hamas is committed to violence and terror," Lerner said. "No one should be living in fear of being attacked in their home by terrorists infiltrating from underground. The IDF is determined to maintain the safety and stability of the area and will continue to use all means necessary to target Hamas' terror activities."

Lerner said the IDF "does not and will not tolerate any attempt to threaten the lives of the people of southern Israel and is determined to continue to foil any attempt to do so."

Meanwhile on Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accompanied by Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon and IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Col. Gadi Eizenkot, inspected one of the recently uncovered attack tunnels near the Gaza border.

IDF Southern Command head Gen. Eyal Zamir briefed the ministers on recent efforts to locate the openings to infiltration tunnels dug under Israel's border.

Not long after the delegation left, a sniper opened fire on an IDF patrol vehicle near the community of Nahal Oz, damaging the vehicle but not injuring anyone.
