Israel to Convert Payphones Into Defibrillator Stations

JERUSALEM, Israel – Israel’s biggest telephone company announced it will convert public phone booths into defibrillators with the help of the nation’s EMT service.

Bezeq Israel Telecom said tens to hundreds of phone booths would be converted into potentially life-saving tools for those suffering a medical emergency.

“Public telephones have been a part of us but naturally with the advancement of technology they have become redundant, and we are happy they will be renewed,” Bezeq said in a statement.

The company has long attempted to get rid of pay phones because they are hardly used and expensive to maintain. The plan to convert the phones still needs regulatory approval.

But will anyone be able to use the defibrillators? No.

If someone where to suffer a heart attack, a bystander would call the ambulance service. When EMTs arrive they will be able to unlock the defibrillator with a code. Without the code, the defibrillator will remain locked.
