Companies That Boycott US States Are in Countries Where Being Gay is Illegal

Are corporations who threaten to boycott North Carolina and Mississippi over transgender and religious freedom laws hypocrites?

The Family Research Council believes so. The organization released a video accusing big businesses of blatant hypocrisy. Watch the video below.

"Heard the news?" the announcer says in the video. "Big business is all up in arms about new laws passed in North Carolina and Mississippi. Leaders of major corporations have denounced the new protections for women, children, churches, and, yes, businesses, too."

The video highlights PayPal, Intel, Coca-Cola, Marriott Hotels & Resorts, Dow, Airbnb, Hewlett-Packard and Cisco.

"They're upset because in North Carolina, the government cannot punish businesses for having bathrooms designated for men only and women only," the video continues.

"And in Mississippi, the new law stops the government from discriminating against people who believe that marriage is between a man and a woman," the announcer says.

"But many of these same corporations are actively seeking to do business in Cuba," the video explains as the logos of Airbnb, Google, Cisco, Marriott, Facebook, PayPal and Starwood Hotels and Resorts appear. Cuba is well-known for its human rights abuses.

The announcer then says companies "are doing business in countries where women are treated as property, and not even allowed to drive!" At this point, the video features the logo of PayPal alongside an image of Saudi Arabia.

Next, the announcer says corporations are "in countries where homosexual behavior is illegal," and the logos of Dow and Hewlett-Packard appear with images of Morocco, Angola, Kazakhstan and Tanzania.

Finally, the video says companies are "even in countries where homosexuality is punishable by death." That statement is accompanied by the logos of Coca-Cola, Intel and Northrop Grumman above images of Yemen, Nigeria and Somalia.

"What hypocrisy!" the announcer exclaims. "As big business scolds conservative lawmakers, just remember -- when it comes to moral authority, these corporations don't have any ground to stand on."

Viewers are then encouraged to stand with North Carolina by signing and sharing a petition at the organization's website.

"We produced this video because the elected leaders of North Carolina should be commended, not threatened with big business boycotts," Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, explained.

"Despite the fact that a majority of voters support this commonsense policy, (North Carolina) Gov. (Pat) McCrory and state leaders continue to receive threats from big corporations who say they will stop doing business in North Carolina unless they allow local government to impose these bizarre bathroom and locker room policies," Perkins continued.

"It's hypocritical to punish the people of North Carolina for expressing the long-standing and common-sense view that bathrooms should be segregated by sex," Perkins said.
