DNC: Disunity, High-Octane Liberalism, and Dark Days for Pro-life Democrats

The Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia started with disunity on "steroids" and moved on to adopt the most liberal platform in its history, CBN News Chief Political Correspondent David Brody said on Thursday's 700 Club.

Host Gordon Robertson interviewed Brody by satellite from the convention in Philadelphia.

He said the DNC was "chaos at the beginning of the week" as angry Bernie Sanders supporters learned from leaked emails that the party backed Clinton all along.

The reaction far surpassed the flap at the Republican convention when Sen. Ted Cruz refused to endorse Donald Trump.

"I was on the floor when Ted Cruz was booed off the stage and I thought that was disunity. Wait a minute, hold on -- steroids this week for disunity. It has been bad and ugly here, but they seem to be getting it together," Brody said.

Sanders did have a big impact on the party platform, though. Due to his influence, the document calls for a $15 minimum wage and an increase in Social Security benefits.

"The Democratic Party has definitely embraced what they call the most progressive, liberal agenda that they've ever had," Brody said. "So the question is, will the independents buy into that?

The move further left has pro-life Democrats feeling abandoned.

"I call them an endangered species in the party, right now," Brody said.

The platform includes a call to repeal the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits taxpayer dollars to fund abortions. In addition, Brody said there is word that the next chairwoman of the party could be the current president of the pro-abortion Emily's List.

"There are a lot of pro-life Democrats who are very concerned that the party has left them," he said.

In the midst of the Democrats' celebration, Trump grabbed the spotlight, but not necessarily in a good way. At a press conference he called on Russia to find the missing emails from Clinton's home server.

That comment became the talk of the convention, Brody said.

"I've known Donald Trump for six years now and I can tell you that when he said that line yesterday at the press conference he was having a little fun, it was a little sarcasm," he said. "The problem is, the last time I checked, you're running for president of the United States and you have to be careful with your words."
