Dallas Cowboy's Romo: 'I Am Lucky to Love Something Bigger Than Myself, The Lord'

Dallas Cowboy quarterback Tony Romo has spent most of his career in the limelight. He has worked hard to keep his life very private, until recently when he opened up in a rare interview about his faith, family, and marriage.

The foundation of faith was laid early on in Romo's life. He attended a Methodist church growing up, but it wasn't until his sophmore year in college that he began a personal relationship with Jesus.

Romo explained to SportsDay in 2011 that when he came to Christ he felt on fire for the Lord.

Now, as he slays the giants on the field of football this modern day David says his love for the Lord has not stopped.

"I am lucky to love something bigger than myself, the Lord," Tony said in a recent interview with NBC's 5 Meredith Land. "I think that's an easy way for me to get through the rough patches that go on in life."

Romo and his wife Candice say that their faith influences everything they do from raising their two boys to how they handle losing a game.

"Without faith and the hope of something after this life, it would be a lot harder to get through the season," Candice said.

The couple, who have been married for five years, say that their greatest joy is raising  their two boys.

"If there is one thing that having kids has taught me it's that you can raise them in the exact same environment and they can be two different kids," said Romo.

Romo said 4-year-old Hawkins and 2-year-old Rivers have two different personalities, but he finds pleasure in their differences.

"We all want our kids to like what you like. For me, it's sports, but you really just hope they're really good kids," Tony said.

The couple mentioned they look forward to having a baby girl one day.

Yeah, we will have one more at least," Candice said.

"Yeah, I'd love a girl," Tony added.

"I think one of the most important things you're going to do in your life is hopefully be the spiritual leader of your family," said Tony shortly after his marriage to Candice in 2011. "Growing up, I was lucky to have a dad who instilled that in me. A lot of your morals and ethics stem from that".

Romo says that he is far from perfect but he believes that his faith allows him to face fatherhood and life's battles with grace.

"The grace I've received from the Lord and Jesus allows you to keep trying to get better," he added.

He brings that mindset to football as he works to improve his skills each day on the field.

"I don't want to squander a gift that's been given to me to do this," Romo said. "I want to give back the way I think the Lord intended when he allowed me to have these abilities."
