Illinois has become another battleground state in the national debate over bathroom policies.

Dozens of families are suing the federal Departments of Education and Justice and an Illinois township over a new federal policy that allows transgenders to use the school bathrooms of their choice.

Parents argue that the police ignores the privacy rights of other students, but Chicago public schools says it supports the policy.

"We ... demand that the federal government cease its bullying tactics to force this dangerous social experiment into our nations' schools," said Jocelyn Floyd, an attorney for some of the families.

Lawyers for Alliance Defending Freedom and Thomas More Society, two conservative groups, filed the lawsuit on behalf of 51 families with ties to Palatine-based Township High School District 211.

The school's policy would allow transgender students and employees to use whichever bathrooms  and locker rooms they choose.

Two years ago, the Department of Education created new guidelines under Title VII to re-interpret its non- discrimination clause to include gender identity.
