Trump Meeting with More Evangelical Leaders as Part of 'United in Purpose' Efforts

Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump is set to meet with major evangelical leaders at a private event next month in New York City.

The event was organized by former presidential candidate Ben Carson, honorary chair of My Faith Votes, along with Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council and Bill Dallas, who leads United in Purpose.

Carson will lead a discussion between Trump and diverse conservative Christian leaders in an effort to help them better understand him as a person, his position on important issues and his vision for America's future, while also enabling him to better appreciate matters of importance to the influential and substantial faith community.

Many of those expected to attend were not supportive of Trump in their respective state primaries.

"The goal is that coming out of this meaningful 'conversation,' the faith leaders and Mr. Trump will be more informed about each other and would know one another better, and that he would see their unity in seeking God's direction for the future of America," said Carson.

The meeting is not intended to be either a fundraising or political campaigning event.

"We wish to talk with specificity to Donald Trump about issues of faith and the role of faith in the civic arena. And, we wish to assure him of our prayers for his family and him. This will be a friendly meeting of people of faith who are genuinely, prayerfully concerned about the future of America," said Sealy Yates, chairman of My Faith Votes.

Dr. Ronnie Floyd, President of the Southern Baptist Convention, recently wrote an article for Fox News defending his decision to attend the event with Trump in June.

"While I have no intention of endorsing Donald Trump -- or any other candidate for that matter -- I believe it is incumbent upon me to learn all I can about each candidate and their platform," said Dr. Floyd.

"We cannot change what exists, alter it or adjust it by sitting on the sidelines and complaining about what we don't like," Dr. Floyd continues.

He goes on to remind Christians of what is at stake during this election.

"This election is about who will appoint as many as four Supreme Court justices. This election is about the dignity of human life from the womb to the tomb. This election is about the most significant religious freedom concerns in American history. I'm not about to sit at home on Election Day because I'm accountable to God and, I believe, I am accountable to my fellow Americans to vote. This is why I am meeting with Donald Trump, and why I would be willing to also meet with Hillary Clinton," said Dr. Floyd.
