What One Man Is Doing to Change America's Spiritual Landscape

It is a crucial hour for the destiny of America and many in the church are desiring to see things change for the better.

Pastor Tom Demaree is one of those people and he has walked more than 20,000 miles praying for the nation in different cities.

Pentecost Walk began 15 years ago on the Pacific Coast. Demaree will add 400 miles to his journey as he concludes a prayer-walk in Washington, D.C., this weekend.

Demaree was in Sprouses Corner, Virginia, when he spoke to CBN News. The small town is located 30 miles east of Appomattox, an area known for the being the last battleground of the Civil War.

Demaree said walking and praying through that town is symbolic of the healing and reconciliation that God wants to bring to America.

"Our nation was reunified, right at the McClean House," he said. "General Lee and General Grant exchanged letters that brought the nation back together."

Demaree told CBN News that after recent riots in Charlotte, North Carolina, God called him to walk again.

"Today we are a nation that is 'united' but we're quite fractured," he said. "We are living in a culture where somehow we're divided on both sides of the aisle. We've decided that being offended is somehow a virtuous stand."

"The only reason our nation is divided is because the Church is divided," he added.

Demaree said he believes God told him to prayer-walk from Charlotte to Washington, D.C., for this reason.

"The Lord shouted in my heart ,'I'm bringing revival to Charlotte, and bringing revival to the United States,'" he said.

He has been joined along the way by churches of every background, whose purpose is to intercede on behalf of the nation.

"Our hope is that this walk is a reminder to the Church to walk out our intercession that as the Church goes, so goes the nation," he said.

Demaree said that repentance and unity are key in changing the spiritual landscape of the nation.

"God is not a Republican and God is not a Democrat. He is God," he explained. "We deceive ourselves when we divide into our camps."

Read Pastor Tom Demaree's Prayer for the Nation:

In this pivotal hour for the destiny of our nation, we cry out for Your mercy, that You would save us from ourselves. We acknowledge that in sinning against one another, we have sinned against You. 1 We long for the fruits of humility and repentance, yet our actions defy both. "Help us O Lord, for the godly are fast disappearing!"

We segregate ourselves by common offense and call it unity. We prostitute ourselves by partisanship and call it righteousness. We blame others for the state of our Union, when Your Word clearly says, "if My people…." All the while, we keep advancing our agendas, as a generation retreats from spiritual and civic engagement.

Forgive us O God; we have abdicated our profound responsibility—to be Your ambassadors of reconciliation in these polarizing times. We come before You now, desperate for a do-over. Teach us to walk afresh in Your humility and compassion. Keep us grounded in Your strength, as You strengthen us to find common ground with one another—not just on Election Day, but every day.

Re-unite these United States!  Lord, You are good and Your mercy endures forever.  Have mercy on us and heal our land. Amen.
