'Blasphemous' DC Comic About Jesus Gets Dropped: 'What if They Were Poking Fun at Muhammad?'

Christian comic lovers are rejoicing at the latest news coming from popular DC Comics. CBN News previously reported the company planned to issue a new comic series centered around a story of Jesus Christ that some critics consider blasphemous. Now, the home of superhero favorites such as Superman, has decided not to follow through with that plan.

The series, written by Mark Russell and drawn by Richard Pace, puts Jesus on a mission by God to learn what it means to be a "true messiah". The comic indicates Jesus needs the help of a created superhero called "Sun-Man" to accomplish his mission. Furthermore, Jesus is seen as naive to what has transpired in society since his departure.

The idea has garnered national criticism. A CitizenGo campaign was started to petition against the series. To date, it has received over 230,000 signatures.

"Can you imagine the media and political uproar if DC Comics was altering and poking fun at the story of Muhammad...or Buddha?" the CitizenGo petition states.

The authors behind the series are seeking a new publisher, with Pace writing on Twitter: "The big news on Second Coming is @manruss and I asked for our book back and @dccomics very generously is doing so. We're looking forward to announcing the new home for Sun-Man, Jesus and their family soon."

Russell and Pace contend that God is not omnipresent and omniscient, turning Jesus into a mere sidekick for Sun-Man.

"God was so upset with the fact that he got crucified the last time that he wouldn't even let him look through the celestial keyhole at Earth to keep up," Russell said during a Bleeding Cool interview. "He still gets to talk to people when they come to Heaven so he has a rough idea of what's going on down there. He doesn't know how sideways things have gone until he's come down to Earth and sees it for himself."

The CitizenGo petition says, "This blasphemous content should not be tolerated. Jesus Christ is the Son of God. His story should not be ridiculed for the sake of selling comic books."
