Floods Bring Clean-Water Crisis to Peru

A temporary halt in heavy rains and receding rivers has caused thousands of Peruvians to get a glimpse of what remains of their flood-ravaged homes.  Many are digging through mudslides and wading through water only to discover they have nothing left.

Near Lima, the Rimac River burst over its banks, causing some of the worst flooding the area has experienced in years.

Since January, El Nino weather conditions have brought heavy rains, flooding, and mudslides to much of Peru's northern coast. Tens of thousands of people have been affected and many are living in shelters.

But their misery may not end anytime soon.  Some meteorologists predict the weather pattern is likely to continue through the end of April.

CBN Humanitarian and Disaster Relief teams are working in various locations throughout the country to deliver timely help to Peruvians in crisis.

CBN's Brian Scott is on the ground in Piura, Peru where he reports that "Thieves, rioters, no electricity, and flood waters made for a severe night on the east side of the city."

Scott said several areas of Piura "have been without water for five days, some ten days."

CBN is delivering water purifiers to provide clean drinking water for the desperate villagers .

Watch the above video to hear more from Brian Scott, and to see the reaction of thirsty children and others in Piura as they drink filtered drinking water for the first time since flood waters destroyed much of their community.
