Groves Drives to Louisiana to Provide Needed Baby Supplies and Help
CBN.com
NASHVILLE, TN—September 12, 2005--After watching another infant dehydrate in the arms of a desperate Louisiana mother, INO Records singer/songwriter Sara Groves was compelled to make a last minute drive to provide baby supplies to Gulf Coast victims. Three days later with the help of local radio station KTIS and her home church, Cedar Valley, Groves’ tour bus and trailer packed to the rafters with diapers, wipes and baby formula made the 1,200 mile trek to Slidell, LA, an eastern suburb of New Orleans on Lake Pontchartrain. Joining her on the trip were her husband, father-in law, a neighbor and a Minneapolis ER doctor.
“There is a lot of finger pointing going on, but from what I could tell, FEMA, the Red Cross, The Salvation Army, and other organizations could work around the clock for a year and just scratch the surface,” Groves comments. “There is no one organization that could respond enough, or fast enough. There is a tremendous need for lay people, like the group at these churches where we worked that just sprung into action, to respond over the next two years.”
Sara Groves encourages people to help in anyway they can by suggesting the two avenues for aid:
1- GO: The media are saying, "stay home, send money.” Half is true. Send money (recommend the Salvation Army) but if you can, go and help. Gather a missions team from your church, neighborhood, friends, etc. There are limitless ways to help.
“In one day at the 2 churches where we served, we offloaded eight semi's, sorted donated items, served meals, cleaned, helped victims find items they needed, stocked a warehouse and more. Get connected to teams going by checking out http://www.phpnetwork.org. Jeff Cardwile's ministry is extremely well run. We worked with 30 of his volunteers from Indianapolis while there. There is an urgent need for carpenters, tree trimmers and a fork lift. Another very worthy ministry that is doing great things in the area is Franklin Grahams Samaritan Purse,” states Groves. https://www.samaritanspurse.org/MP_Article.asp?ArticleID=46
2 - SEND NEEDED SUPPLIES: These areas are in desperate need of CLEANING SUPPLIES. Pine Sol, Clorox, Windex, disinfectants, waterless anti-bacterial hand wash, brooms, etc. Also, BEDDING: Pillows, blankets, sleeping bags, sheets, blow up mattresses, etc. No used clothes needed.
