Colossians 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”
Life has many disappointments and heartbreaks, even for those who are among Believers. For Pastor Donnie McClurkin , those hardships included a youth fraught with domestic abuse, dysfunction and an early adulthood bout with leukemia. But just as God takes, He also gives. As someone who has equally enjoyed both life's many blessings and varied devastations, McClurkin is perhaps best equipped to speak to the masses who struggle daily to reconcile God's unconditional love with their painful challenges. This Spring, he returns to minister through an amazingly comprehensive new project, Psalms, Hymns & Spiritual Songs.
This newest release in McClurkin's catalog is traditional, high church, Praise and Worship Gospel music exhibiting his absolute unique ability to simultaneously entertain, heal and teach. Highlights include “I Call You Faithful (I Call You Holy)” the rousing praise and worship jam that hits right at the heart of Sunday mornings. Introduced by McClurkin earlier this year on a national TV broadcast, the song is sure-fire hit that proclaims His greatness! Indicative of the tome's title, the set includes a number of well known and honored church standards such as “We've Come This Far,” “I Love Jesus” and “Awesome God.”
One of the best moments of the evening that was captured on the double CD set was when McClurkin and Gospel legend, Richard Smallwood teamed up to for his rendition of the classic “TOTAL PRAISE.” Backed by a sweeping 40-piece orchestra and the beautiful sounds of Smallwood's effortless classic training on the grand piano, there are truly rare moments in music when one's breath is taken away – and this is no doubt one of them.
A unique melodic and spoken word medley dubbed “Languages” gives McClurkin the opportunity to expound on his rousing success in distant countries, performing tracks in Japanese, Russian, and Spanish, and ultimately culminating in a Dutch composition, “God Is A Good God.” Featured at the end of languages medley is co-laborer in the Gospel, friend and label mate, Joann Rosario , on the beautiful worship cut “Saciame Senor/Yo Se Que Estas Aqui (Satisfy My Soul/I Know that You Are Here).”
The bonus track, “Ooh Ooh Child,” a soul classic revisited by two of the biggest Gospel stars, features McClurkin and friend Kirk Franklin, is an ode of promise, for a world in the midst of uncertainty and hopelessness.
Recorded live at The Rock Church in Virginia Beach, VA, on July 16, 2004, and backed by a live orchestra, this album is rich with commentary and poignant testimonies certain to delight, inspire and move all those who experience Psalms, Hymns & Spiritual Songs.
With a double-platinum and Gold album and mass critical acclaim, it would be easy for a man of lesser conviction to abandon the course he's charted and succumb to the temptations of secular life or rest on his laurels. Pastor Donnie McClurkin has managed to keep his church and ministry at the forefront of his career. Psalms, Hymns & Spiritual Songs is another cornerstone in the life and times of this dynamic spiritual leader.
