Shadow Wolves. What a cool name! Picture Courtesy Scott S. Warren The Shadow Wolves are renowned group of Native American trackers used by the U.S. government to track smugglers along the U.S. - Mexico border. The unit was created by Congress in 1971. The 2003 edition of the Smithsonian magazine has a great profile of their work in Arizona. Here's a brief description of how this elite force works from a group that runs an unofficial website dedicated to the Shadow Wolves: "The Shadow Wolves were founded in 1972 under a program created by the U.S. Congress to track drug smugglers transporting contraband -- mostly marijuana -- on Indian reservation lands. The Shadow Wolves say their name refers to the way the group hunts, like a wolf pack. If one wolf finds prey, it will call in the rest of the pack. They have high-tech equipment like night-vision scopes and global positioning satellite locators, but they prefer to use traditional skills. The Shadow Wolves use skills that have been passed down over centuries, from generation to generation. The unit continues that tradition, with the more experienced members teaching the younger ones how to track." Now this group of elite fighters is reportedly in hot pursuit of Osama Bin Laden and other terrorists along the Pakistan - Afghanistan border. More from The Sunday Times: "The Pentagon has been alarmed at the ease with which Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters have been slipping in and out of Afghanistan. Defense officials are convinced their movements can be curtailed by the Shadow Wolves." Click here for the rest of the article. Your Thoughts Should the United States have assigned the 'Shadow Wolves' to find Bin Laden years ago? Should this information even be made public since it could aid the terrorists?
