Women of Courage

"Women of courage are standing up for freedom and human dignity, and the United States stands with them. We must not forget that the advance of women's rights and the advance of human liberty go hand in hand."

This is old news but worth a mention.

On March 7, 2007, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, honored 10 foreign women by distinguishing them with the first State Department's International Women of Courage Award.

In celebration of International Women's Day 2007, Rice thanked these emerging leaders for their fight to bring freedom, justice, peace, and equality to women around the world.

Rice also praised the honorees for their attempts to "combat the dehumanization of women in every form."

What I found very encouraging was that seven of the ten honorees were from Muslim countries, including Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Click here for the list of honorees.

This should send a signal to our friends in the Muslim world that the United States is committed to promoting the values of freedom and democracy around the world and that America is serious about defending what President Bush has called the "non-negotiable demands of human dignity."
