CBNNews.com - ANKENY, IA - A popped tire on the runway couldn't stop Hillary Clinton from reaching her appointed destination.
After waiting for two hours - she showed up in the small town of Ankeny, Iowa -- perfectly coiffed, unfazed and ready to convince voters that she can run the country and fix the nation's health care system.
"I'm so sorry," she told the crowded gymnasium. "We had a problem with the plane."
Hillary spoke to the group at the Des Moines Area Community College about her universal health care plan.
This isn't Clinton's first trip to the school. She made a visit back in 1993 to talk about the very same issue. As first lady, she tried to find a solution that would give all Americans health care, but failed. Clinton says she learned from her mistakes and wants to try again.
"Part of why I came back here is to emphasize that we had a problem," she said. "And the problem has gotten worse and not better."
Clinton's plan calls for every American to secure health insurance.
People without health insurance would have to choose from the options available to Congress members.
And as she outlined the specifics of her plan, she took direct aim at the heath care plan proposed by Sen. Barack Obama.
Obama claims that there are similarities between his plan and Clinton's, but she says that's simply not true.
"He has called his plan universal, then he called it 'virtually universal,'" she said. But his plan "simply does not deserve that label."
According to Clinton, 15 million would be uninsured under Obama's plan. His plan calls for mandatory health care for children, but not their parents.
"If you believe you can enforce a mandate on children, that means you enforce the mandate on the parents of the children to enroll the children," Clinton said. "So why would you leave out the parents?"
She also took issue with Republicans.
"If anything, Democrats should stand for universal health care. That distinguishes us from the Republicans. The Republicans don't believe in it. Democrats do and we should fight for it," she said.
Clinton's visit to Iowa comes at a time when she, John Edwards, and Obama are at a virtual dead heat in the polls.
