McCain Worse Than George Bush Among White Evangelicals

John McCain take note: you have work to do with white Evangelical voters. The latest poll from the respected Pew Forum shows McCain isn’t doing as well as President Bush was in 2004. Maybe most importantly is the fact that a lot more white Evangelicals are undecided about who they’re going to vote for. That could be good news for McCain IF he starts paying more attention to the concerns of this community.

About six-in-ten (61%) white evangelicals favor McCain while 25% support Obama. McCain's 36-point advantage among this group is comparable to Bush's lead in 2000 but smaller than Bush's 43-point lead in 2004. Nonetheless, Obama has made no significant gains among this important constituency. The number of white evangelicals who say they would vote for Obama (25%) is about the same as the number who supported the Democratic presidential candidates in June 2004 (26%) and June 2000 (28%). White evangelicals are more undecided today than they were at this point in the previous two presidential elections. More than one-in-ten (12%) white evangelicals say they do not know who they would vote for if the election was held today
In order for John McCain to increase his numbers, he’s going to have to do two things. First, he’s going to need a solid VP pick that will energize the base. This is crucial. If it doesn’t go down well with the Evangelical grassroots, expect a backlash and any goodwill that’s been attained so far will vanish. Secondly, speeches and “straight talk” on life, marriage and faith will get Evangelicals excited and motivated. Cutting back on pork barrel spending ain’t gonna do it.
