This just came in to me from Senator Bill Frist’s office. He’s bringing up the Marriage Protection Amendment next week.
First of all, a senior House aide just told me that a start to the Senate-House conference on immigration hasn’t been set yet, but he told me they better set it fast or there will be no way the President signs any sort of immigration bill by the 4th of July. As for a prediction, here’s how I see it going down. Bottom line: If there’s going to be a bill, it will be heavy on border enforcement and light on a pathway to citizenship.
The Senate is expected to take up and vote on the Marriage Protection Amendment on June 6. What I’m hearing on the Hill from my sources is this doesn’t have a chance of passing. The Senate may be controlled by Republicans, but there’s simply not enough “social conservatives” in the Senate to get this thing passed. The amendment would add language to the Constitution defining marriage as between a man and a woman. You would think this is a no brainer.
It seems like my interview with DNC Party Chairman Howard Dean is making some national headlines. You know, I wonder what the DNC is thinking. They just can’t win. Dean comes on to talk to us and hopes to endear himself to conservatives and yet look what happens. Liberals, especially the gay community is now upset at him. You have to kind of feel for the guy.
More...There’s word from the Senate today that Democrats are going to try and force a vote on the stem cell issue next week. This morning on the Senate Floor, Senate Minority Leader Reid (D-NV) and Senator Durbin (D-IL) say they will press for a vote on human embryonic stem cell research (H.R.810). The Senate will debate health care bills next week, but Durbin seems ready to insert their bill into a health care bill.
This just coming across the AP wires today. Finally, a Congressman gets it. It took him awhile though!
A key congressman on Thursday agreed to allow the federal govenrment to spend $5 million for a Memorial honoring those killed when the hijacked Flight 93 crashed in a Pennsylvania field on Sept. 11, 2001.
We haven’t talked about judicial nominees for awhile, but guess what? They’re back. Sometime this month, Senate Majority leader Bill Frist is going to start debate on Brett Cavanaugh, and later this year it will be Terrence Boyle. Both are considered very controversial from the perspective of the Democrats. The Minority Leader in the Senate, Harry Reid, is now even starting to talk about a possible filibuster. Here’s part of his comments to reporters yesterday on the Hill.
I received word this morning that the broadcast decency bill that has already been passed by the House may get passed quickly in the Senate. Read the except below I received from a top staffer in Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist’s office.
