I just heard from Governor Romney’s communications director who sent me the following email in response to the 1994 letter in which Romney talks about equality for gays and lesbians.
Harry Houdini was one of the best escape artists there has ever been. If Mitt Romney is to survive as a Presidential candidate, he’ll need to pull a Harry Houdini. Have you seen the latest news?
Did you really think former house Majority Leader Tom Delay would sit on the sidelines after leaving office? Of course not. He’s back with what his handlers are calling a moveon.org for the right. It’s called GAIN, an information network that will try and make a difference in each congressional district by motivating grassroots volunteers to take action.
In Washington D.C., smoking inside public buildings is forbidden except in one place: The U.S. Capitol. The new Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi detests smoking. She detests it so much that she’s thinking of banning it inside the Capitol.
Senator Sam Brownback is making one last attempt to try and pass the Public Expression of Religion Act through in this 109th Congress. Don’t count on it. There’s a better chance of Mark Foley becoming President of the United States than this bill passing.
I have just been informed by a Republican source on the Hill that there is a very good chance that abstinence only programs, funded by Congress, could be history in 6 months.
So what’s in a name? When casting your vote for President would you vote for John Hitler? President Hitler? Would you vote for John Booth? President Booth? (as in John Wilkes Booth) What about Lee Oswald? President Oswald? (as in Lee Harvey Oswald?) How about Timothy McVeigh? President McVeigh?
The Fetal Pain bill went down to defeat in the House of Representatives. This is the pro-life bill that would have required doctors to inform a woman who is seeking an abortion at the 20 week time frame that the her unborn child will feel pain. She would be given a brochure and it would require that the woman sign a consent form indicating that she has received the information and indicating whether or not she has requested anesthesia for the unborn child.
Out of all the politicians spinning their way through the Iraq Study Group report, I really wanted to hear what Speaker to be Nancy Pelosi had to say. I’ve received a transcript of her comments at an earlier press briefing today. The reason I’m curious is because she’s anti-war and wants an immediate troop pullout. Yet the Iraq Study Group didn’t suggest that.
Could it be? Have Evangelicals found 'their' President? Kansas Senator Sam Brownback has now formed an exploratory committee to see if he’ll run for President. In other words, yes, he’s going to run for President.
The political death of U.N. Ambassador John Bolton is the perfect example of why it takes 60 votes in the Senate to do anything. Bolton had to rely on a reccess appointment over a year ago because Democrats blocked him from getting an up or down vote in the Senate.
In January, Keith Ellison will be sworn in as the first Muslim member of Congress. When he takes the oath of office, he says he will not put his hand on the Bible. Instead, he’ll put it on the Koran.
Democratic Senator Barack Obama and his famous pastor friend Rick Warren are getting raked over the coals by pro-life groups because of Obama’s appearance this weekend at Warren’s church. Pro-life groups don’t think he should be invited into this huge mega-church and being given a mega phone so to speak.
Senator and Doctor Bill Frist will NOT run for President in 2008. This is not a shock and probably the right move. There was talk a year ago that he would run and if Republicans did well in the Midterms and the war in Iraq was going well, I’m sure he would have ran. But instead Democrats won big in November and there will be no President Frist…at least not now.
Whether or not Democrat Congressman Alcee Hastings should be head of the House Intelligence Committee is a good question with a not so easy answer. Let’s think about this for a moment.
Leave it to House Republicans to go out with no bullets left in the gun. When Congress comes back next week, the House is expected to vote on a pro-life bill that basically would make parents aware of the pain the fetus experiences during abortion. No one is quite sure if it will pass.
I’ve been saying for quite sometime that there’s no way Democrats are going to push a liberal agenda through the House or Senate. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid have both said they would not do that and I believe them. Why?
Senator John McCain is considered the Republican front runner for President in 2008. But he has not had the coziest relationship with Evangelical Christians in the past.
Now that Congressman Steny Hoyer has been elected to be the new House Majority Leader, I thought I’d resurrect a one on one interview I did with Hoyer about a year ago.
Do you want to know a significant way the Midterm Elections will affect the direction of the country? Well, besides the Iraq war, let’s look at the U.S. Supreme Court.
Hoyer V Murtha is not a U.S. Supreme Courtcase. No, it's not a legal battle. It's going to be more like a wrestling battle. Like Hulk Hogan V the Rock.
David Brody gives a special recognition to the fabulous CBN crew who made our special Election coverage possible. If you ever wanted to see CBN behind the scenes, check this out.
Illinois 6th district has been held by Republican Henry Hyde for 32 years. But he's retiring and Democrat Tammy Duckworth, an Iraq war veteran, is challenging Peter Roskam in this Republican stronghold.
You want a little break from politics? Check out little Elvis Presley! We caught his act in small town Sparta, Missouri. We saw him performing in front of a post office. We were there to cover the Missouri Senate race but we just had to share this video with you. He’s 6 years old and actually performs in Branson, Missouri.
I’ve seen a lot of nasty campaign ads in my time, but this one has to move to the top of the list. The Republican National Committee has put out an ad about Tennessee Democratic candidate Harold Ford Jr. Let’s just say it doesn’t portray him in the best light.
David Brody is reporting live this week from Bristol, Tennessee. He looks at the hotly contested senate race between Bob Corker and Harold Ford Jr. Watch the video blog.
As Willie Nelson once sang, we’re “On the Road again…going places that I’ve never been”. I’ll be live on the 700 Club in Bristol, Tennessee next Monday and Tuesday (October 16 and 17) to report on the Tennessee and Virginia Senate races.
There’s an interesting article in Time Magazine detailing how the Republican Party is confident in their get out the vote operation. The article is below.
We’ve heard a lot of talk about how the Republicans are in big trouble because of the Foley scandal. But let’s take a look at what some Democrats are saying about this. You’re not going to believe it.
Let me try and breakdown this Dennis Hastert controversy a little bit. Ever since the Mark Foley email scandal broke, House Republican leaders were quick to distance themselves from Hastert. Did you ever wonder why? Yes, it's every man for himself on Capitol Hill but there's more.
This won’t make national news tonight but believe me, this is big. Congressman Mike Pence and Congressman Joe Pitts have come out in support of Dennis Hastert.
The Washington Times called on Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert to resign over the Mark Foley sexual emails. Well, now the House Majority Leader, John Boehner is coming to the Speaker’s defense. I just received this from the Majority Leader’s office. Read below.
Where do I begin with disgraced Congressman Mark Foley? Well, let’s start with this. The GOP better watch out. Mark Foley’s actions are despicable enough. There’s no need rehashing his torment. He’s getting help and well he should. I pray that he’ll straighten himself out but the only way he’ll do that is to ask for God’s help and mercy.
Ok, this pretty much sums up the GOP’s troubles in the midterm elections. Even the chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee is in trouble of losing. Rep. Tom Reynolds is the guy in charge of making sure House Republicans stay in charge this November. Well, he may lose his re-election campaign! It’s that bad.
I''m going to be blogging about the midterm elections every day from now until November 7th so check back here to get my thoughts and observations. Let me start with a few tidbits.
You want to know why liberals can't stand Joe Lieberman? Read below. I've been given a cop of his speech on Iraq he made the other day. This pretty much sums up the views of one courageous Democrat, especially in this day and age of back stabbing politics and where party loyalty is put ahead of conscious.
The House is going to take up The Public Expression of Religion Act (PERA) which would prohibit attorneys' fees from being collected in cases against the establishment of religion clause. This would really be a blow for the ACLU and they're working hard to put an end to it.
Several interesting bills will be up in the House Tuesday. I'm getting word from a few sources who say the Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act is scheduled to be brought up. The House actually passed this bill, but the Senate amended it a little bit so the House will bring up the Senate version and it will surely pass.
You all remember the great American philosopher Rodney King from the L.A. racial riots in the mid 1990s. He coined the phrase “Can’t we all just get along”? Well, it’s not so simple in politics, especially among Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill. When it comes to abortion, forget middle ground. You rarely find it.
If the Democrats take control of the House, liberal Nancy Pelosi will most likely be the Speaker of the House. That will raise concerns with a host of conservative Republicans, especially National Security Republicans. They believe she is not the one to lead a House Majority in a time of war when it comes to war policies.
Within a radius that spans a few hundred miles, there are 10 incumbent House Republicans who are in danger of losing their seats in the House: three in Indiana, three in Kentucky and four in Ohio. If many of these start to flip and become Democratic takeovers, then the GOP's reign of power in the House will likely come to an end.
Let’s face it. There is a decent chance Democrats could take over control of the House of Representatives. Come midterm elections in November, we’ll know for sure but already, Republican candidates are being given some sound advice: stay away from national issues and focus on local politics.
This morning I obtained a memo that’s being sent to President Bush from conservative groups who want the nomination of the FDA commissioner pulled. They’re angry that he supports loosening the restrictions on the Morning after pill, or Plan B as it’s known.
So which is worse? The summer being over or Congress coming back into session? The Republicans and Democrats are back in D.C. for three weeks of legislating before they break for midterm elections.
Many political forecasters as well as enemies of Senator Rick Santorum have pretty much buried him in his Senate race against upstart Bob Casey. The Republican Senator from Pennsylvania has been down by serious double digits and looks vulnerable. The Democratic Party has made him their top target since he is one of the Senate’s top republican leaders. But guess what? A new poll has encouraging news.
I report to you today from the Grand Canyon where I'm working on a story I like to title "God in the Grand Canyon." Tuesday morning, my photographer Jerome Young and I drove five hours from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon. We came here because there have been attempts by secular geologist to remove a book sold in bookstores here called Grand Canyon: A Different View. More...
I'm reporting tonight from Las Vegas where I just finished an interview with 18-year-old Brittany McComb. She's the valedictorian at Foothill High School in nearby Henderson, Nevada who had her microphone cut off because she...get ready....I know the suspense is killing you....
The Senate is going to debate a bill on Tuesday July 25 that basically makes it a federal crime to take minors across state lines to obtain abortions in order to get around parental notification laws in certain states.
Guess who’s coming to Senator Joe Lieberman’s defense in his tough Connecticut primary race? Well, it’s not Senator Hillary Clinton. It’s her spouse Billy. Read below as this just came in to me from the Lieberman campaign.
It looks like there's going to be a vote either Thursday night or Friday morning on the Child Custody Protection Act (S. 8), which prohibits taking a minor child across state lines for an abortion in circumvention of state laws requiring parental notification.
White House spokesman Tony Snow went at it with a reporter at Wednesday's White House briefing over the issue of stem cells. Talk about a big time defender of the President, check out their exchange.
The House passed a bill Wednesday that makes sure courts can't rule on anything to do with the phrase "Under God" in the pledge of allegiance. Congress can do this because let's face it. They created the courts so they can take away its power too. See who voted against this bill?
Now that President Bush has signed the Broadcasting decency Act, broadcasters face a $325,000 fine instead of $32,500 if they put offensive and vulgar content into their TV or Radio shows. It looks like it’s having some effect. Read the Washington Post article.
Did you hear that Senator Joe Biden “missed his train” the other day and that’s supposedly why he couldn’t campaign for Senator Joe Lieberman in Connecticut? Is anyone buying that one? Is Biden going to reschedule anytime soon? Don’t hold your breath.
I’m receiving word from a source in the House of Representatives that there will be a vote on the Marriage Protection Amendment the week of July 17. That’s next week. No official date has been set. This is Marilyn Musgrave’s bill which is just like Wayne Allard’s bill in the Senate. It would add language to the Constitution defining marriage as between a man and a woman.
I’m going to be going out on the road a lot next month. I’ll be covering all sorts of Congressional races for the 700 Club. The theme will consistently be: Can the Democrats take back control of Congress? They need to win 6 Republican held seats in the Senate to do so and they must keep all of their seats. Therein lies the problem. They may lose a few of those seats including one in Maryland. Read the article.
I just finished a 15 minute interview with Senator Joe Lieberman here in Danbury Ct. We followed him here as part of a story I'm working on regarding the Connecticut primary race.
I'm blogging tonight from Hartford Connecticut where I attended the debate between Senator Joe Lieberman and challenger Ned Lamont. I've been on the ground here the last few days working on an upcoming in depth story on the Connecticut primary race. Here's my take.
The Republican dominated House Judiciary Committee failed to pass a bill that would have protected the words “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance. A Republican from South Carolina sided with the Democrats and that was that.
Roll Call is reporting this morning that the House of Representatives will be voting on a resolution condemning The New York Times for publishing a damaging story that could threaten our national security.
House leadership has just unveiled their “American Values Agenda”. Listed below are the priorities the House GOP is committing to. They say these items below WILL receive votes on the House floor in the coming weeks and months.
Even his biggest supporters sense that Senator Rick Santorum is in trouble. The Republican Senator from Pennsylvania is in the fight of his life against Bob Casey as he tries to hold on to his Senate seat in this November’s midterm elections. But he’s trailing badly and now his approval numbers are at an all time low. See theLas Vegas Sun article.
Many folks around the country have always wondered: If I’m going to vote for a Democrat this fall, what do they really stand for? Well, I just got my hands on their fall agenda. It’s called “A New Direction for America.” Here’s what they say they’ll do if they’re in control of the House and Senate. Happy reading!
I just got word from a source on the Hill that the House was able to defeat an amendment that contained an earmark for $300,000 for the Gay & Lesbian Center for a multipurpose facility in Los Angeles, CA. This earmark was tucked inside the appropriations bill the deals with the Departments of Transportation, Treasury, the Judiciary and Housing and Urban Development. But Congressman Steve King introducing an amendment that would kill the money for the center and it was passed by voice vote. Therefore, funds in the bill cannot be used for the Gay and Lesbian Center.
What ever happened to the big fight over President Bush’s judicial nominees? Remember them? Ever since Judge Alito and Judge Roberts were sworn in as Supreme Court judges, it seems like Republican leadership isn’t willing to cause a big stink about other appellate judges who have been waiting years for a hearing. Manny Miranda is leading a conservative group pushing for Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist to bring these nominees up. They hold a press conference at the National Press Club on Monday.
Staffers on Capitol Hill this week will hear from the Congressional Life Forum on a topic that is painful to talk about: Abortion. From time to time, aides to Congressman are given off the record briefings on certain topics so they can become more familiar with them when crafting legislation.
The stem cell issue is so divisive, but there may be some middle ground here. There’s something called pluripotent stem cell research that would allow research on stem cells, but wouldn’t harm human embryos in any way. Congressman Roscoe Bartlett has introduced a bill in the House. Below is an excerpt from his press release:
Senators are about to vote “I don’t” instead of “I do” on the issue of marriage. The Senate may be in Republican control but the Marriage Protection Amendment won’t pass. My sources are telling me supporters will be happy with 50 votes when they take a vote on Wednesday.
