Congressmen Call America to Prayer

CWNews.com-CAPITOL HILL - "Our Father in Heaven."

It's not every day that you see something like this: Congressmen -- in unison and in public -- boldly proclaiming the power of prayer.

Rep. Mike McIntyre, D-NC, said, "If we are praying for God's healing in our land and strength for our nation, then prayer should be the first resort, not the last resort."

Here in Washington, it's always tough to get both Republicans and Democrats together on an issue. But the topic of prayer has changed that equation.

And so, on the west steps of the Capitol, more than 40 lawmakers from both parties, and representing 20 states, came together as one voice. The message was simple. Now more than ever, America is deeply in need of prayer.

"God is the Maker, the Creator, and to God be the glory. Let's pray and let's give God the glory after the prayer is answered," said Rep. Al Green, D-TX.

The group, called the Congressional Prayer Caucus, is asking Americans to pray five minutes a week for the country. They're calling on God to heal the country, and in the process, build a spiritual wall of protection around the nation.

"We deal with all kinds of different problems in Congress," Rep.Todd Akin, R-MO, said.
"But after we scratch and dig and think about it, I always come back to the answer, it's like a little kid in Sunday School class. Jesus is always the answer."

Nationwide, religious conservatives believe that America is fighting a culture war, a war that gets worse day by day. From Internet pornography to the moral decay of television to gang violence -- the signs are everywhere.

And now, with America at war with radical Islam, a nuclear North Korea and a dangerous Iran, these congressmen believe protection will come from God only.

Rep. Doug Lamborn, R-CO, said, "It has to be God that is protecting our country. We can watch over, but it will be in vain if God isn't also watching over."

This group of lawmakers promises to be on their knees not just today, but every day. One by one they signed a call to prayer document, which they plan to bring to every state capitol with the same message: Prayer works.

"In Jesus name we pray, amen."
