Christian Group Sends Rat-Busters to The Big Easy

CWNews.com-In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans faces another potential problem.

Rats have taken up residence in many abandoned buildings and storm drains.

"The city is not overrun with rats, but we still have homes that have not been gutted out,"
Claudia Riegel, from New Orleans Mosquito and Termite Control, said.

Who did the city call for help?  Ratbusters – a team of workers from Operation Blessing, a Christian aid organization that has been helping New Orleans since Katrina hit.

Operation Blessing enlisted a bunch of students on spring break to answer the call for help to get rid of the disease bearing rodents. The students loaded up wagons with eco-friendly rat poison and hit the streets of New Orleans.

"I'm not used to hard labor but it was so fun. So I knew it was an opportunity I couldn't pass up again," Kristen Feldmann, a student volunteer.

The student led team says they've gotten a warm reception from everyone in the neighborhoods. Except the rats, of course.

"It's always nice to feel liked and welcomed and so it just encourages you to do more," Ashley Peterson, another student volunteer, said.

But volunteers say it's the eternal benefits that matter most when serving New Orleans.

"We want to give our lives to serve these people and to show them that the Lord has not forgotten about them. He hears their prayers. He sends us to love them," program organizer Paul Reynolds said.
