Millions of Americans Participate in the National Day of Prayer

CWNews.com-WASHINGTON – On the National Day of Prayer, the President called America a prayerful nation -- and said that's what makes us strong.

At an official gathering in the White House East Room, President Bush called the nation to prayer -- a call dating back to America's founding.

"It's exactly what our first President did. George Washington. It's the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and to humbly implore His protection and favor," the President said.

The White House observance was one of 50,000 across the nation. Organizers say it comes at a critical juncture, a time when the nation's at war and facing internal strife.

"Nobody has the answers for the problems we're facing either abroad, or in our own land here, and we need to seek divine guidance," Shirley Dobson said.

As Chairman of the National Prayer Task Force, Dobson said the focus is on putting aside political differences to acknowledge dependence on the Creator.

"This is probably the toughest prayer of all. Particularly for those of us in politics," Bush said.
The President gave thanks for the gift of freedom.

"We give thanks for the brave men and women who risk their lives to defend it. We give thanks for our families who love and support us. We give thanks for our plenty. We give thanks for our nation," he said.

As public prayer events took place on Capitol Hill and at the Pentagon, a symbolic and poignant prayer was offered by a young Cadet Chaplain from Virginia Tech, Eun-Jae Yu.

"We ask that you guard and guide our President and all who serve the people of these United States. May integrity guard lives. We ask you unite us as truly one nation under God. May humility return to our ranks and may that blend of integrity and humility heal our land."
