According to a recent report by the National Association of Realtors, U.S. home sales were down 16.7 percent in December - a decline larger than the 11 percent drop predicted by some economists.

The drop came as the original November deadline for first-time home buyers to take advantage of the federal $8,000 tax credit was set to expire.
