Applications for unemployment benefits dropped last week in the latest sign of a brightening employment picture.

The Labor Department announced that initial jobless claims fell by 6,000 to a seasonally adjusted 462,000.

It's the second straight week the numbers have dropped.

Analysts say the data indicates the economy is slowly improving, despite the fact that claims rose last month and the unemployment rate remains at 9.7 percent.
