Social Security Increase Lowest in Decades

Ad Feedback

Millions of Social Security recipients are expecting historically small increases in their benefits for the second year in a row.

Nearly 58 million retirees, disabled workers, spouses, and children get Social Security benefits.

Preliminary figures suggest a less than 2 percent increase in next year's benefits, one of the lowest raises since automatic adjustments were adopted in 1975.

Exact numbers are not known yet because the Labor Department hasn't released its September report due to the partial government shutdown.
