How Do You Quit Smoking? Very Carefully

Today is the 'Great American Smokeout' when smokers are urged to lay down their cigarettes for 24 hours, or better yet, for good.

There are lots of products on the market to help people kick the habit. But you need to choose carefully.

Studies show 90 percent of smokers trying to quit, start smoking again within the first year.

"You cannot resist the craving. You cannot keep fighting," said smoker Julie Gelfand.

So to break their cigarette addiction for good, 5 million Americans have turned to the prescription drug Chantix since its release two years ago. Dr. Richard Cullen says it's the best cure for smoking he's ever seen.

"The successes are amazing," Cullen said. "I've had three fellas - all middle aged white fellas - who are smokers and also alcohol abusers."

"It's not indicated for alcohol, but I put them on Chantix, They stopped smoking, they stopped drinking, their wives are happy, they've lost weight, they're exercising, because this gets rid of all the things that have to be done to try to block pleasure centers of the brain," Cullen said.

Although Chantix works, The Food and Drug Administration is fielding more reports of serious injury, even death, from the side effects of Chantix, than any other drug on the market.

The side effects are both physical and emotional. Blackouts, dizziness and muscle spasms led to things like car accidents. Then there's the aggression, paranoia and depression - even to the point of suicide.

For those wary of Chantix, Zyban is another prescription strength smoking cessation drug. Zyban is an anti-depressant with fewer side effects than Chantix, but is far less effective.

And if you don't want to go to the doctor, over-the-counter nicotine gum or nicotine patches have proven to help people kick the habit.

And that's just the beginning.

Coming soon from Sweden is the first nicotine mouth spray.

Also, long-lasting nicotine mouth pouches offered by a Danish company are due out early next year. And perhaps the most revolutionary option is a vaccine could be available in a couple of years.
